Discover, Harvest and Taste

Introduction to wild mushroom harvesting

After a brief theoretical presentation on the major families of mushrooms and the methods of harvesting and identification, we head out into the forest to gather what Mother Nature offers. We then return to the cottages where we will clean, prepare, and cook our harvest together.

This training will give you the ability to correctly identify and harvest several types of mushrooms on your own.

Duration: half a day, minimum registration according to schedule
Workshops available from June to October

Our local guide is passionate and will answer all your questions.

Service provided by an external local guide upon request.

Interpretation of plants

Our ancestors roamed the woods, hunting, trapping and gathering the best that Mother Nature had to offer according to the seasons.
Today these activities are still at the heart of the lives of the people here.

The flora of boreal forests is rich and varied... carnivorous plants (purple pitcher plant or sundews), flowers of astonishing beauty (bear's-foot trefoil, marsh marigold), edible plants (juniper, sweet gale), medicinal mushrooms (ganoderma, chaga), medicinal plants (savoyan, boreal clintonia), edible mushrooms (chanterelles, wrinkled pholiota), aromatics, spices and edible tubers.

Tailor-made activity.

Join a workshop to discover, gather, and cook wild spring plants. Led by Gérald le Gal, co-host of the show "Coureur des bois" and founder of Gourmet Sauvage.

Come discover the basics of survival in the wild, without the use of modern equipment, at Les Primitifs survival and nature awareness school. You will learn to fend for yourself with what nature has to offer.

This is not a wilderness survival exercise. The training includes lectures and practical workshops. We teach ancestral knowledge that humans used long before compasses, GPS, and matches.

Hunting and fishing

Fishing and hunting are permitted around the site on public land.

The main game hunted here is for black bear, moose, Canada goose, and several species of partridge, including willow ptarmigan. The Eco-lodges at Lake Matagami are located in zone 17 and are close to zones 16 and 22.

Check the hunting seasons on the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife website here > .

Lake Matagami is home to several fish species, including pike, sturgeon, whitefish, and loach. But the fish that makes every angler's mouth water is the walleye, which can be caught year-round. This white-fleshed fish is so tender and delicious! (Source: Fishing & Wildlife )
